- Google handled about 94% of searches in Sri Lanka in September 2026, and over 98% on mobile, so Google is where SEO effort should go.
- Customers search in English, Sinhala, Tamil and transliterated Singlish, so each language you serve needs its own properly translated page.
- Tourism businesses serve two search markets: local customers and foreign travellers who search from home in their own language, sometimes on engines like Yandex.
- No one can guarantee a number one ranking, and buying links breaks Google's spam policies, so treat such promises as red flags.
SEO in Sri Lanka mostly means doing well on Google, because almost every search here happens there. For a local business, that comes down to a complete Google Business Profile, a fast website that works well on a phone, genuine reviews, and pages written in the language your customers actually search in. None of it is a trick, and none of it happens overnight.
This guide is for owners of hotels, villas, guesthouses, clinics, salons, cafes and other local businesses. It covers how people here search, what matters on Google Maps, and how to spot bad SEO advice.
How people in Sri Lanka search
Google dominates. In September 2026, StatCounter put Google's share of searches in Sri Lanka at 93.7%, with Bing at 4.9%. On mobile phones, Google's share was 98.3%.1 If you are going to spend time on one search engine, it's Google.
The wider picture, from DataReportal's Digital 2026 report for Sri Lanka:2
- 13.9 million people used the internet at the end of 2025, about 59.7% of the population.
- Facebook's ad reach was 9.00 million people and YouTube's 8.82 million in late 2025. DataReportal notes these are advertising audiences, not exact user counts.
- The median mobile download speed was 45.64 Mbps, according to Ookla data in the report.
A note on phones versus computers. StatCounter's device figures for Sri Lanka show desktop ahead, at 74% of web page views in September 2026, and the split has swung a lot (mobile was 40% in January 2025).3 StatCounter counts page views on websites that use its tracker, not people, so treat that figure with care. Your own website analytics are a better guide. Either way, Google uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking,4 so your site has to work well on a phone.
Languages: English, Sinhala, Tamil and "Singlish"
Sinhala and Tamil are Sri Lanka's official languages, and the Constitution names English as the link language.5 Search behaviour mixes all three. Many people search in English, some in Sinhala or Tamil script, and many type Sinhala words in English letters, often called "Singlish".
What this means in practice:
- Find out how your customers search. Ask them. Look at the search terms in your Google Business Profile performance report and in Google Search Console. A clinic in Colombo may find patients search in English for specialist services but in Sinhala for symptoms.
- Give each language its own page. Google recommends separate URLs for each language version, rather than switching language with cookies or browser settings.6
- Translate the real content, not just the menu. Google works out a page's language from its visible content, not from code tags.6 A page with a Sinhala menu bar and English body text is still an English page.
AI search follows the same pattern. Google lists Sri Lanka as a country where AI Mode is available, with Sinhala and Tamil among its supported languages.7
Two different markets: locals and foreign travellers
Tourism businesses often serve two audiences who search in completely different ways.
Sri Lanka received 2,362,521 tourist arrivals in 2025. The top markets were India (531,511), the United Kingdom (212,277), Russia (186,580), Germany (147,966) and China (132,035), according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.8 Those visitors search from home, weeks before they arrive, in their own language and often on their own country's version of Google.
Some don't use Google much at all. In Russia, Yandex had about 70% of searches in September 2026, against 28% for Google.9 A villa with many Russian guests may need to be visible there too.
Take a guesthouse in Ella. Its local customers might be Sri Lankan families booking a long weekend, searching in English or Sinhala on their phones. Its foreign guests might be British hikers searching "guesthouse Ella near Little Adam's Peak" or German couples searching in German. Each group needs pages that answer its questions, in its language.
Local SEO and Google Maps
For "near me" and map searches, your Google Business Profile matters as much as your website. Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence is partly based on how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have.10 We explain those three factors in more detail in how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI.
Google is also clear that there is "no way to request or pay for a better local ranking".10 What you can do is make your profile complete and accurate. Our Google Business Profile optimization checklist walks through every section in order.
A cafe in Galle Fort is a good example. Tourists standing on Church Street search "coffee near me" and see whatever Google Maps shows within a few hundred metres. A correct pin, accurate opening hours, recent photos of the food and plenty of recent reviews will do more for that cafe than any amount of blogging.
Directories and citations that matter in Sri Lanka
A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website. They help Google confirm you are real and where you are. Quality and accuracy matter far more than quantity.
- Rainbow Pages. Sri Lanka's long-running business and telephone directory, run by SLT Digital Services, now online at rainbowpages.lk.11
- SLTDA registration. Guesthouses, homestays, bungalows and boutique villas can register with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, which links to lists of registered establishments.12 Registration is also a trust signal for travellers.
- The platforms your customers use. For hotels and villas, that means booking and review sites. For clinics, the doctor channelling and health platforms your patients already use. For cafes, food and travel review sites.
- Local associations and press. Chambers of commerce, professional bodies, tourism associations and local news sites are often more valuable than generic directories.
Whatever you list, keep the details identical everywhere: the same business name, the same address format and the same phone number.
.lk or .com?
The LK Domain Registry runs .lk addresses, including .lk itself and second-level options such as .com.lk and hotel.lk.13 Google says a country-code domain is "a strong signal" that a site is meant for that country.6
That helps a Colombo clinic whose patients are all in Sri Lanka. It is less useful for a villa whose guests are mostly in London, Delhi or Berlin, where a .com can feel more neutral. Google also lists other location signals, such as local addresses and phone numbers on your pages and your Business Profile.6 If you already have a domain that works, switching rarely pays off. Moving domains carries real risk and takes time to settle.
Hosting and speed on mobile data
Google's ranking systems "look to reward content that provides a good page experience".14 In plain terms: your site should load quickly and be easy to use on a phone.
- Compress photos before uploading. Oversized images often slow hotel and villa sites.
- Use a reliable host and a content delivery network (CDN) if many visitors are overseas. Google says server location is a signal, but not a definitive one.6
- Make phone numbers and WhatsApp links tappable, and keep the booking button visible.
- Test your site on an ordinary phone using mobile data.
Reviews
Reviews feed directly into prominence.10 Ask every customer, every week, rather than in occasional bursts. Reply to reviews, good and bad, briefly and politely.
Follow Google's rules. Its policy bans offering payment, discounts or free services in exchange for reviews, and bans asking only happy customers to leave them.15 Fake or incentivised reviews can be removed, and they put your whole profile at risk.
AI search basics
More people now ask Google's AI Mode, ChatGPT or Gemini for recommendations. The foundations are the same as for normal SEO: a website Google can read, clear answers to real questions, a complete Business Profile and good reviews. Our guide to answer engine optimisation explains how to structure your content so AI tools can use it.
Realistic timelines
Google says some changes "might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months".16 As a rough guide:
- Fixing your Business Profile details, hours and photos can affect what customers see within days.
- New pages usually take weeks to be crawled, indexed and settle into a ranking.
- Building prominence through reviews and links is an ongoing job measured in months.
How to judge an SEO provider
Google's own advice on hiring an SEO is worth reading. Its first warning is simple: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."17
Red flags:
- Guaranteed rankings or "page one in 30 days" promises.
- Bought links. Google lists buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam.18 Packages of "500 backlinks" are a warning sign, not a bonus.
- Unsolicited emails. Google says to be wary of firms that email you out of the blue.17
- Keyword stuffing in your pages or your Business Profile name. It's against Google's spam policies.18
- Secrecy. If they won't explain what they're changing, or want to own your Google accounts, walk away.
Good signs: they ask about your customers and bookings, not just keywords; they show past work; and they report on enquiries and bookings, not only rankings. Google suggests asking what results to expect, and in what timeframe.17 If you want to see how a structured SEO and AI search programme is usually scoped, our SEO and AI search optimisation page sets out what's included.
Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take to work in Sri Lanka?
Google says some changes take effect within hours and others can take several months. Updates to your Google Business Profile, such as hours, photos and categories, can show up within days. New website pages usually take weeks to be indexed and settle. Building reviews and links that raise your prominence is an ongoing effort measured in months, not weeks.
Should my website be in Sinhala, Tamil or English?
It depends on how your customers search. Many Sri Lankans search in English, others in Sinhala or Tamil, and foreign travellers search in their own languages. If you serve several groups, create a separate page for each language with properly translated content. Google recommends separate URLs for each language rather than switching language with cookies or browser settings.
Is a .lk domain better for SEO than .com?
A .lk domain is a strong signal to Google that your site is meant for Sri Lanka, which helps businesses whose customers are local. For tourism businesses whose guests mostly search from abroad, a .com can work just as well. Google also uses other location signals, such as your address and your Business Profile. Changing an existing domain is rarely worth the risk.
Can an SEO company guarantee first place on Google?
No. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and that you should be wary of anyone who promises one. Google also says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking on Maps. A reputable provider will explain what they plan to change, what results to expect, and how they will measure enquiries and bookings.
