- Answer engine optimization means structuring your content so search engines and AI tools can use it as the direct answer to a question.
- Google says optimising for its AI search features is still SEO, with no special requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- Question-style and longer searches are much more likely to trigger AI summaries, according to Pew Research Center data.
- You can measure AEO with Search Console's generative AI reports, ChatGPT referral tags in analytics and by asking customers how they found you.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring your website so that search engines and AI assistants can use it as the direct answer to someone's question. Instead of only chasing a ranking position, you aim to be the answer people see in a featured snippet, a Google AI Overview, a voice reply or a ChatGPT response.
That sounds technical, but most of AEO is simply saying useful things clearly. Here's what it means, where answers appear, how it differs from SEO, and a step-by-step plan any small business can follow.
Answer engine optimization in plain English
Think of the questions your customers ask before they book. "Is the villa pool heated?" "Can I get a couples massage on a Sunday?" An answer engine is any tool that tries to answer those questions directly, rather than just listing websites. AEO is the work of making your website the clearest, most trustworthy source for those answers.
It isn't a separate discipline with secret rules. Google's own guide says optimising for its AI search features "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO."2 AEO is best understood as SEO with a sharper focus on questions and answers.
AEO overlaps with generative engine optimization (GEO). Broadly, AEO is about answering questions; GEO is about being cited or recommended inside answers that AI tools write themselves.
Where answers appear
- Featured snippets and "People also ask". Google describes featured snippets as boxes where the usual result format is reversed, with the answer text shown first. Google's systems decide which page to feature. Asked whether you can mark up a page to become one, Google's answer is simply: "You can't."3
- AI Overviews and AI Mode. These use "query fan-out", running several related searches across subtopics to find supporting pages, and they show a range of links alongside the answer.1
- Voice assistants. When someone asks a question out loud, they usually hear one answer, not a list. A short, direct answer on your page is easier to read out.
- ChatGPT and Perplexity. ChatGPT searches the web when a question would benefit from it, and answers that use search include inline citations.5 Perplexity searches the web in real time and adds numbered footnotes linking to its sources.6
Questions are exactly what trigger these answers. In a Pew Research Center study of real Google searches by US adults, 60% of searches starting with words like who, what, when or why produced an AI summary. Searches of 10 or more words produced one 53% of the time, against 8% for one- or two-word searches.4
There's a catch worth knowing. In the same study, people clicked a normal result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it didn't.4 So being the answer matters more than ever, because fewer people scroll past it.
How AEO differs from SEO
The foundations are the same. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.1 If you want a refresher on those basics, our SEO and AI search page has short definitions of SEO, AEO and GEO.
What changes is the focus:
- The unit is the answer, not the page. SEO asks "does this page rank for spa Galle?" AEO asks "does this page clearly answer 'how long is a full-body massage?'"
- Searches are longer and more conversational. People type, or say, full questions rather than two keywords.
- Success isn't always a click. Sometimes the win is that your clinic's name and answer are what the person reads, and they phone you later.
A step-by-step AEO plan for a small business
1. Collect the questions people really ask
Start with what you already have. Scroll through your WhatsApp chats, booking emails and reviews, and ask whoever answers the phone. A boutique villa might find the same ten questions again and again: airport transfer times, whether children are welcome, check-in times, whether breakfast is included. Add the questions Google shows in "People also ask" for your main services, and the question-style searches in Google Search Console.
2. Write answer-first
Put the answer in the first sentence, then add the detail. Compare these:
- Before: "At our villa we believe every stay should be special, and we offer a range of thoughtful touches for our guests…"
- After: "Yes, the pool is heated all year. Children are welcome, and pool towels are provided."
You don't need to chop your pages into tiny fragments. Google says there's "no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces" and no ideal page length.2 Clear headings that match real questions, each followed by a direct answer, are enough.
3. Add FAQ sections where they help people
An FAQ on each key service or room page is one of the easiest AEO wins. Keep each answer short and self-contained, so it still makes sense if quoted on its own. One update to know: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results (the expandable questions under a search result) from May 2026.7 Write FAQs for your customers and for answer engines, not in the hope of extra space on the results page.
4. Use structured data for your key facts
LocalBusiness structured data lets you state your address, phone number, opening hours, price range and more in a format search engines read reliably.8 It's useful, but keep expectations realistic. Google says structured data "isn't required for generative AI search" and no special markup is needed.2 It also doesn't guarantee any special display.8 Make sure your markup matches what's visible on the page.1
5. Let the crawlers in
An answer engine can't quote a page it can't read. Check that your robots.txt file, hosting and any security or CDN settings allow Googlebot.1 OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers.9 Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot so your site can appear in its results.10 We cover these basics in more detail in how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI.
6. Keep your business facts consistent, and earn reviews
Answer engines compare what your website says with what the rest of the web says. If your site lists 9am opening and Google Maps says 10am, you've given them a reason to doubt you. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show in local results, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.11 Our Google Business Profile checklist walks through the details.
How to measure AEO
AEO is harder to measure than rankings, but you're not flying blind.
- Google Search Console. Traffic from AI features is counted in the main Performance report under the "Web" search type.1 Google has also added dedicated generative AI performance reports, rolled out to all websites by 31 August 2026. They show impressions in features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus which pages appeared, countries, devices and dates.12
- Featured snippet checks. Keep a list of your target questions and check monthly who holds the snippet. Note the change after you rewrite a page answer-first.
- ChatGPT referrals. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends, so you can see these visits in Google Analytics.13
- Bookings and enquiries. Add "How did you hear about us?" to your booking form or WhatsApp greeting. "I asked ChatGPT" is now a real answer, and it's the one that pays the bills.
Tracking whether AI tools mention your business by name is a bigger topic, and we cover it in our guide to generative engine optimization.
The bottom line
Answer engine optimization isn't a trick. It's the habit of finding the questions your customers ask and answering them clearly, accurately and first, on pages that search engines and AI tools can read. A spa, a clinic or a villa that does this well helps its customers and its search visibility at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Is answer engine optimization different from SEO?
Answer engine optimization is part of SEO rather than a replacement for it. It uses the same foundations: crawlable pages, helpful content and a trustworthy business presence. The difference is focus. AEO concentrates on finding the specific questions customers ask and answering each one directly, so search engines and AI tools can use your page as the answer.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap, but the emphasis differs. AEO is about answering questions clearly so your content becomes the answer in snippets, AI Overviews or voice replies. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is about being cited, mentioned or recommended inside answers that AI tools write themselves, such as ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode. Good AEO usually helps GEO too.
Do I need FAQ schema for answer engine optimization?
No. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search from May 2026, and says structured data isn't required for its generative AI features. FAQ sections are still worth having because they answer real customer questions in a clear format. Focus on the quality of the answers rather than the markup around them.
Can a small business do AEO without technical skills?
Yes, most of it. Collecting customer questions, rewriting page openings so they answer first, adding short FAQs and keeping your Google Business Profile accurate need no coding. The technical parts, such as checking robots.txt, crawler access and structured data, are usually a one-off job for whoever manages your website.
