- Choose Sales, Leads or a Click-to-WhatsApp messaging setup based on how guests actually book, not a Traffic campaign.
- Start with broad audiences and Advantage+ audience, then retarget website visitors, video viewers and people who messaged you.
- Meta's hotel catalog ads suit large inventories, so small villas usually do better with strong video ads and retargeting.
- Track bookings with both the Pixel and Conversions API and judge results by cost per booking against OTA commission.
Facebook ads for hotels work best when you optimise for bookings or real conversations, not likes, and let Meta's automation find the audience while you supply strong video and clear offers. Track every booking with the Pixel and Conversions API, follow up fast on WhatsApp, and judge results by cost per booking, not cost per click.
This playbook covers the setup, the creative and a simple 30-day test. We'll use two examples throughout: a five-room boutique villa near Galle that wants guests from the UK and Europe, and a city hotel in Colombo selling weekend staycations to local families.
Pick the objective that matches the booking
Meta asks you to choose a campaign objective first. For hotels, three matter.
- Sales. Use this when guests can book and pay on your website. Meta optimises towards people likely to complete a booking. Since 2025, Meta has been folding its old Advantage+ shopping campaigns into one standard setup: a sales campaign counts as "Advantage+" when its budget, audience and placements are all left on automatic.12
- Leads. Use this when most bookings start with an enquiry. Meta now offers the same Advantage+ setup for leads campaigns.1
- Engagement or Sales with a messaging destination. Use this for Click-to-WhatsApp or Messenger ads. You set the conversion location to "Messaging destinations" and choose WhatsApp.3
Click-to-WhatsApp ads don't have to optimise for conversations alone. Meta lets eligible advertisers optimise for leads (with the Leads objective) or for purchases made through WhatsApp (with Sales or Engagement). In Meta's own study, purchase optimisation averaged 10% lower cost per purchase than optimising for conversations, and lead optimisation averaged 24% lower cost per lead.3 Those are Meta's averages, not a promise for your property.
Which to choose? The Galle villa sells high-value stays to people who want to ask questions first, so Click-to-WhatsApp often fits. The Colombo hotel sells a fixed package with a clear price, so a Sales campaign sending people to a package page usually makes more sense.
Audiences: go broad, then retarget
Detailed interest targeting matters much less than it used to.
Meta's ad system uses a retrieval engine called Andromeda to pick a shortlist of a few thousand relevant ads from tens of millions of candidates for each person.4 In practice, your creative does much of the targeting. A video of a quiet pool with jungle views will find a different person from a video of a family buffet.
Prospecting
Start with a broad audience: the right countries, a sensible age floor, and Advantage+ audience switched on. For the villa, that might be the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. For the city hotel, it's Sri Lanka, perhaps narrowed to the Western Province.
Lookalike audiences still exist, but in many campaign types they now act as suggestions. Meta may show your ads beyond the lookalike when it expects better results.5 Treat a lookalike of past guests as a helpful hint, not a fence.
Retargeting
Most people don't book a holiday on first sight. Build custom audiences of:
- website visitors from the last 30–90 days, especially people who checked rates or started a booking;
- people who watched a good share of your video ads;
- people who messaged you or engaged with your Instagram or Facebook page.
Show them something new: a guest review, a room tour, a reason to book now.
Catalog ads for hotels: useful, but not for everyone
Meta's travel ads, part of Advantage+ catalog ads, support hotel, flight and destination ads. They use a travel catalog and intent signals to show people the hotels they looked at, or similar ones.6 Setting up hotel ads means creating a hotel catalog, adding hotel events to your website, building audiences and then using template tags in the ads. You can also set up date-specific pricing.7
Meta's travel ads guide describes prospecting with a product set of over 100 hotels.6 That tells you who these ads were built for: chains, groups and booking sites with lots of inventory. A single villa with five rooms gets less from them. For a small property, a few well-made video ads and a good retargeting audience usually do the same job with far less setup.
If you do run catalog ads, the hard part is the data. One hotel-marketing vendor calls ID mismatches between the feed, the website and the booking engine "the biggest implementation risk".8 Every room type needs the same ID everywhere.
Creative that works for hotels
Because creative now does so much of the targeting, give Meta several genuinely different ads, not five versions of the same photo. Ideas that suit hotels:
- Vertical Reels. Short, phone-shot clips feel native on Instagram and Facebook. Open with the best moment: the view from bed, the first step into the pool.
- Room and view walk-throughs. A 20-second walk from the door to the balcony answers "what's it really like?" better than a still photo.
- Clear offers. "Stay three nights, pay for two" or "Weekend family package, breakfast and pool included". Put the offer in the first line and on the video.
- Guest content (UGC). With permission, reuse guest videos and reviews. They feel more believable than polished brand footage.
- The practical stuff. Airport transfers, distance to the beach, kids' facilities. These answer the questions that stop people booking.
For the villa, angles might be "slow mornings", "a base for exploring Galle Fort" and "a private group escape". For the city hotel: "a weekend off without the drive", "kids eat free" and "pool day with lunch". If you need help planning a steady content pipeline, see our guide to social media content.
Seasonality and budget
Plan around when people book, not just when they stay. Sri Lanka's southwest coast is at its best from December to April, and the southwest monsoon starts in April.9 So the villa should be building interest among UK and European travellers well before December, while they are still choosing where to go. The Colombo hotel's rhythm is local: school holidays, long weekends and festive periods.
On budget, there's no magic number. Work backwards from what a booking is worth:
- Work out the average value of a booking and the margin you keep after commission and costs.
- Decide the most you can pay in ads for one booking and still be happy. That is your target cost per booking.
- Set a test budget large enough to get a meaningful number of conversions (bookings, or qualified WhatsApp leads) in a few weeks. If your target cost per booking is high, you'll need more budget, or a cheaper step to measure, such as leads.
Compare that cost per booking with what you pay online travel agencies in commission. That's the fairest benchmark.
Landing pages and WhatsApp follow-up
Clicks are only half the job. Send each ad to a page that matches it, loads fast on a phone and shows the price and what's included. We cover the six common problems in why ads get clicks but no bookings.
If you run Click-to-WhatsApp ads, the reply speed matters as much as the ad. In the UK winter, a traveller in London messaging at 9pm is messaging at 2:30am in Sri Lanka. See how to stop losing bookings after hours on WhatsApp for ways to cover those hours.
Tracking: make sure Meta sees the bookings
Meta can only optimise for what it can see. Meta's guidance is to send events through both the Pixel and the Conversions API, with deduplication so a booking isn't counted twice.10 In practice:
- Check that your booking engine supports the Meta Pixel and Conversions API, either natively or through a partner. Many hotel booking engines run on a separate domain, so test that the booking confirmation actually fires a Purchase event with the booking value.
- Track the steps before the booking too: a date search, viewing a room, starting checkout.
- For WhatsApp bookings, Meta has a Conversions API for Business Messaging. It can send events such as LeadSubmitted and Purchase from the chat, which is what unlocks purchase optimisation for Click-to-WhatsApp ads.11 Usually you'd do this through your WhatsApp platform provider.
Make a test booking before spending, and confirm it appears in Events Manager.
A simple 30-day test plan
- Days 1–3: set up. Check the Pixel, Conversions API and a test booking. Build retargeting audiences. Prepare at least four different creatives.
- Days 4–14: one prospecting campaign. One campaign, broad audience, Advantage+ placements, all four creatives. Leave it alone while it learns. Daily changes make it hard for Meta to learn, and hard for you to read the results.
- Days 8–30: add retargeting. Once you have some website visitors and video viewers, run a smaller retargeting campaign with reviews and an offer.
- Day 15: first review. Look at cost per booking or cost per qualified lead, not clicks. Pause clear losers and add one or two new angles.
- Day 30: decide. Compare cost per booking with your target and with OTA commission. If it works, raise the budget gradually. If not, check the landing page and follow-up before blaming the ads.

Common mistakes
- Boosting posts instead of building campaigns. Set up booking campaigns in Ads Manager, where you choose the objective and the conversion you want.
- Optimising for the wrong thing. Traffic campaigns bring cheap clicks from people who rarely book.
- Too many tiny ad sets. Splitting a small budget across lots of audiences starves each one of data.
- One creative, forever. Ads tire. Add new angles every few weeks.
- Slow replies. A WhatsApp ad with a reply the next morning wastes the click.
- Judging by cost per click. Cheap clicks can mean expensive bookings.
Frequently asked questions
Which Facebook ad objective is best for hotels?
Use Sales if guests can book and pay on your website and your tracking records bookings. Use Leads, or a Click-to-WhatsApp ad with a messaging destination, if most bookings start with a question. Avoid Traffic campaigns for booking goals, because they aim for clicks rather than for people likely to book.
Do small hotels need Meta catalog ads?
Usually not at first. Meta's travel and hotel catalog ads were designed for properties and sites with large inventories, and they depend on a clean catalog with matching IDs across your feed, website and booking engine. A small villa or boutique hotel normally gets similar results from a few strong video ads plus retargeting, with much less setup.
How much should a hotel spend on Facebook ads?
Start from your numbers, not a rule of thumb. Work out the average booking value and margin, decide the most you can pay for one booking, and set a test budget big enough to record a meaningful number of bookings or qualified leads within a few weeks. Then compare your cost per booking with OTA commission.
Do Click-to-WhatsApp ads work for hotels?
They can, especially for high-value stays where guests want to ask questions first. Meta lets eligible advertisers optimise these ads for leads or purchases, not just conversations. They only work if someone replies quickly, including evenings and weekends, and if bookings made in the chat are tracked so Meta can learn from them.
